FROM MYSTERY TO MASTERY: LEVERAGING
MINECRAFT FOR POWERFUL STUDENT LEARNING
At ASB, there is a great love among the students for the video game Minecraft. Conversely, among many
of the parents, there is a fear of this unknown mystery that seems to have taken over their child’s life. We
have started the process of demystifying this game and helping everyone develop a better understanding
of the wonderful world of Minecraft.
Minecraft, The Mystery
Simply put, Minecraft is an entire world made of Legos. I am not misusing the word “world” here. The
sheer scale of this game’s environment is record breaking and unbelieveable. A ‘world’ is made up of lego
cubes or blocks. Each block is comparably equivalent to a 3’x3’x3’ space on Earth. This world has many
different biomes - snow, deserts, jungles, and others. Since a Minecraft world is scaled to being three
times the size of our Earth, it’s impossible to explore it all. Each block can be picked up and placed onto
other blocks. Everything in a Minecraft world is made up of different types of blocks. These include: dirt,
water, wood, stone, gravel, glass, or sand blocks.
