Why Is Minecraft Relevant to Education?
Schools across the globe are starting to see the educational value of Minecraft. From
geography and electrical engineering to learning habitats and architecture...this video
game is being used to teach students in a way that is not only deeply engaging but fun.
An example of this is when the government of Denmark decided to recreate Denmark
to scale in the world of Minecraft. This was done in an effort to make geography more
interesting for students.
College level courses have started to use Minecraft for electrical engineering because it has the ability to
build electrical circuits through the properties of Red Stone in the game. People have even started to go
as far as to build working computers inside the game Minecraft! There are many practical uses for
Minecraft in education. The challenge is parents not knowing if their children are playing the game in a
way that is educational.
Parents and Minecraft
To address this challenge, we have begun educating our parent community about Minecraft. We want to
empower them to converse with their children to gain a better understanding of how they are using it.
We are organizing parent Minecraft sessions where they can play the game with guidance from a game
designer. They get an opportunity to experience what their children are playing and clarify their concerns.
By showing parents the benefits of this game, they can engage their children in insightful conversations
and better apply Minecraft to benefit their children educationally.
