of tiredness that comes from using your brain and your hands in a way that you have not been used to
and from taking on roles that are new to you.
Experience shapes understanding – the MS team came away from Day 9 understanding the power and
potential of disrupting the traditional school day.
Reflecting and Iterating
In student feedback following the event, students said that of the 21st Century Skills, it was ‘creativity’
which they felt they had gained the most experience with. Student feedback clearly indicated that
students valued the specific knowledge they gained during the studios and wished that the Day 9
prototype could have been longer. Teachers concurred saying they would have liked more time and that
they valued the opportunities for students to be creative. They also noted that the student choice element
and the multi-age environment were both highlights.
After debriefing what was a fantastic prototype (in the spirit of the R&D motto, “always beta”), we began
to tweak, tune, adjust, and develop for our next iteration of the prototype. Could we make Day 9 longer?
How could we better describe what we had achieved? Such was the enthusiasm for the potential of this
prototype, it has been suggested that we have a Month 9! It is this kind of vision, process, and energy that
drives innovation at ASB.
Going forward the MS faculty wants to leverage the understanding and expertise our teachers have gained
in order to improve and develop this prototype in the Middle School, while continuing to provide
sustainable support for our incredibly busy teachers. As a result, Day 9 will become Studio Six - a nod to
the six central tenants of our prototype. In Spring 2015, we will host a three or four-day studio.

Project Based Learning (PBL)
Now that we know the potential for such a project, we are eager to find ways to deepen the learning
experience for students. It is definitely a case of ‘watch this space’ as the Middle School team considers
how we can continue to create purposeful relevant approaches to enriching the student learning
experience of our Middle Schoolers.
