Why Technology, Robotics, and Artificial Intelligence?
Because they are exponential in nature. Singularity University is an
innovative educational program that aims to use exponential
technologies to find solutions to the world's grand challenges of health,
education, food, space, energy and more. Ray Kurzweil, the founder,
defines exponential technologies as such, “Technologies that
demonstrate continued accelerating growth of capabilities (speed,
efficiency, cost-effectiveness, or power), driven both by advances in the
individual technologies themselves, as well as through their interplay and
synergies.” Sustainable solutions have been created in fields like health,
environment, space using exponential technologies. It is time we use
technology, robotics and artificial intelligence to create sustainable
solutions to urban development problems.
Why Design Thinking?
According to the Henry Ford Learning Institute, “Design Thinking is an
approach to Learning that uses specific techniques and mindsets to
develop the student's creative confidence. Working to identify problems
and generate solutions for design challenges allows students to learn to
frame their thinking around the mindsets of developing empathy,
promoting a bias towards action, encouraging ideation and working in a
culture of prototyping.” This is the six step process of design thinking that
we used to create solutions: Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype,
Feedback, and Reflect.
Speakers and Mentors
Speakers and Mentors for the Urban Development Studios of
Transportation, Waste Management, Alternative Energy, Infrastructure,
and Architecture and Urban Design were invited to help students
empathize with the needs of these fields.
Mr. Shankar Deshpande introduced the students to the concept
of Urban Development. He is the Joint Project Director (Town
Planning) of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development
Authority and has initiated several urban planning and
development projects. He also spoke about the several
