What will ASB’s plan/setup for these pieces look like if
we move forward before and during implementation?
Do we have enough time and resources to approach
With the average length of stay for teachers being 3. 4
years, how will ASB guarantee that trained teachers
remain at ASB?
Sample MAC programs currently being implemented
While there are a multitude of MACs across the globe, it is extremely
important to recognize the purpose of development when considering
sample programs that may support our understanding of effective MACs
at ASB. Often MACs are developed out of necessity rather than choice
(e.g. A rural setting where students from several age groups are put
together due to the limited number of students and/or teachers).
However, other schools choose to implement MACs intentionally, for the
specific purpose of achieving given social and/or cognitive benefits. ASB
would fall into the latter category, thus it is important to investigate what
makes intentionally chosen Multi-Age programs successful.
Synopsis of Research
One aspect of Multi-Age programs that research shows to have
been effective in schools is the concept of competency-based
learning. It has been called many names: Continuous Progress
Format, Advancement Based on Competency (ABC), Continuous
Progress Schools, and Continuous Progress Education. The idea
of "Continuous Progress" refers to academic and developmental
growth of students in a multi-age program. Students learn new
materials as they are ready, regardless of their age, and teachers
help them advance as far as they are able (Mack, Jamie, 2008 p
