Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook users by age
Students using Facebook more than ten times per day tend to be older,
while the younger teens are more often posting to Snapchat and
Instagram. The chart below shows the percentage of users per age group
who use these apps more than ten times per day.
12 13 14 15 16 17-18
Facebook 3% 2% 18% 31% 18% 15%
Instagram 8% 23% 25% 26% 12% 6%
Snapchat 5% 18% 26% 28% 15% 5%
It remains to be seen if the trend towards a preference of visually-oriented apps will follow the younger teenagers as they move through to
high school, or whether they will transition to Facebook as a primary
social media platform. What also needs to be further explored is why
more international students than American students are using the
visually-oriented apps, particularly Snapchat, which offers both instant
messaging and photo-sharing. Is this context-related or is it that students
find more novelty in their new culture that they wish to share with
others?
