Recent research of the impact of technology screen time on sleep
patterns, for both teenagers and adults, demonstrate the health-related
dangers of sleep deprivation related to use of technology devices (APA,
2011; The Guardian, 2015). Most of the students claimed that their use
of social media is balanced and enhances their relationships. So clearly

As parents and educators, the data here, both in the quantitative and
qualitative forms, can inform us about how to better develop health and
wellness guides about the use of technology and social media, especially
for transitioning families. Teenagers have correctly identified and
harnessed social media’s powerful affordances of instantly
communicating text and visuals to those who may be at a distance in
order to preserve, develop, and maintain relationships. While supporting
them in the nurturing of their friendships, parents, school counselors and
educators must more intentionally guide teenagers in forming positive
habits around the use of social media.
