DEVELOPING MOBILE APPLICATIONS
IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
Middle school students at the American School of Bombay take a trimester
exploratory class called Design Technology. We have incorporated a mobile
application development unit for seventh graders since August 2015. The
unit is called ‘ There’s an App for That!’ which is designed to allow students
to apply structured problem solving strategies to problems they identify and
to develop testable prototypes on their mobile devices.
Students used Design Thinking protocols to organize their project. They
‘class sourced’ commonly used applications and sorted them by their
human function and identified common characteristics such as organization,
entertainment, time saving and social connections. Students investigated
potential project ideas such as communicating with teachers, academic
issues, music access and provision of information.
Ideating techniques were used to explore possible solutions, designs were
drawn and navigation systems created. Work was peer reviewed, discussed
